- Tribal Settlements- transect walks around some settlements- During our field visits to the settlements of Hara and Deety we noticed children of different age groups. We could discuss the possibility with the communities, to have some children participate in transect walks and create maps, sketches/ drawings, photos of their hamlet during the walks. The intent is to get adolescents to participate in a co-visioning exercise of their hamlets.
- Govt. Schools- Schools could be spaces for getting adolescents to actively participate in large numbers.
- A cursory visit to two schools in Hakladi helped understand the time and feasiblity to approach school going kids given summer holidays will be commencing shortly.
- The headmasters and the teachers in the schools visited thus far are supportive, hence we could co-plan with them to engage with the children.
- Some schools don't have summer camps planned for the holidays - how can we work with that?
- coming up with a plan for engagements during the next 2 months (summer holidays) and conveying specific dates to the kids will ensure some level of participation during their vacation
- Libraries
- co planning activities with the librarians (for eg. Suresh in hemmadi) to conduct reading sessions and storytelling activities.
- The topics could be related to local governance, history of their village, local economy of their village, etc., for reading and discussion sessions. Based on their interest we could get adolescents to write prose or poetry; participate in extemporary, debates etc
- Makkala Grama sabhe- Keradi GP was a pioneer for this concept which allows adolescents to participate in local governance. Here we could help facilitate more discussions reg. local governance and the adolescents participation in the discussions
- Considering that this happens annually in the GPs in Vandse cluster, we could initiate more mock sabhes for active participation
- Some GPs don’t conduct the sabhes annually also, so we could outline ways to encourage the to facilitate these events
- Summer camps in Hemmadi library- Suresh mentioned about having summer camps for Hemmadi govt schools kids starting from around April 12th, which would involve various activities and bringing in resource persons to talk about some topics.
- We could intervene and help co-facilitate some such activities like Birding, nature walks, sketching/ drawing, among others. Some of these activities was suggested by Suresh
- Nature walk, birding, photography, etc- Identifying local groups of adolescents from different villages/ GPs and have weekly activities planned for them. The groups could take forms of clubs like nature clubs, photography club, etc. The intent is to get children to understand the natural environment around them, and the local ecology. The information gathered by children could be put together in the form of a biodiversity index
- **Mapping the neighbourhood-**Anecdote from the field - during our house hunting phase we had met an 8th grade kid who showed us around. She knew a lot about her village - the places, buildings and people. It was a delight to see her navigate to different points through people’s backyards and narrow paths. She had quite a few stories to tell about her village and also few of the landmarks we came across.
- We are looking at the neighborhood mapping exercise as a process that would create space for adolescents to express their individual narratives about the place they reside in, their everyday interactions, the familiarity and connection they build with their community, etc
- Sketching, Storytelling, Skits- We could look at some children in each of the GPs that maybe interested or are very good at the performing arts. Art forms like:
- Yakshagana
- Bhajana Mandalis; Dance- Bhajanes
